Scientific activity

The work of the Arboretum, predominantly carried out by the staff of the Arboretum itself and of the Department of Forest Botany at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, concerns the ecology and dendrology of arborescent plants and is conducted in line with two fundamental principles:

  • The study of growth dynamics, productivity, cultivation and technical quality, and the scale of variability, and the health of foreign tree species, in origin, cultivated in stands, in terms of their usefulness to forest economy. To this end, forestry experimental areas are laid out and maintained and detailed records of these areas are kept. In general, the results of observation carried out on individual species in the experimental areas are published following 30-40 or more years of cultivation.
  • The study of the growth, health and variability in foreign species of trees and shrubs, and the evaluation of their morphological characteristics, both for application in landscape architecture, pharmaceutics, apiculture and industry, and for a wider understanding of the adaptive capabilities of various species. These studies are primarily carried out within the framework of a long-term, ongoing research topic, The Acclimatization of Foreign Species of Trees and Shrubs, conducted by the Department of Forest Botany and the Rogów Arboretum. The results of many years of observation and the detailed measurements of selected plant groups are published annually as a summation of around 10-20 years of research.

In addition, an annual exchange of seeds is carried out on a worldwide basis with more than 400 scientific institutions.
